Wellness Wednesday - Climate Change National Day of Action

Today, the People’s Climate Movement is organizing a National Day of Action. People all across the US will be participating in marches, aimed towards raising awareness and demanding action on climate change.

From their website:
“We are calling for a sustainable, democratic and just economy that preserves our planet and works for all peoples.

At the end of 2015, nations will meet again to negotiate an United Nation’s climate agreement in Paris that commits all countries to address climate change. What comes out of Paris will not mark the end of our efforts but could be an important step in the global process of confronting climate change.

This fall we will continue to build a powerful movement for change and bring the demand for bold action to our leaders in anticipation of the Paris climate talks. We will insist that our public leaders support us in taking action in building a new economy that will avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis. And, we will call out those public leaders, corporations and other organizations that are standing in the way of progress as they deny the science and block the popular alternatives.”

So why am I sharing this with you? Seems like an odd topic to talk about for Wellness Wednesday. Yet, I think it’s the perfect topic. So much of our health, both physical and mental is related to the world we live in. Again and again, studies have shown how nature plays such an important role in our lives, whether it be breathing cleaner air to help those with asthma and other breathing conditions or taking a walk in a park to help relieve stress. Our environment and climate plays a big role in our overall well-being. Therefore, why wouldn’t you want to preserve the world you live in?

Another reason I want to talk about climate change is because it’s a topic no one really wants to talk about. It’s a big, scary issue that seems insolvable. People either don’t believe in it, or they think people are overreacting about the issue, or they think they can’t make a difference. However, recent research is showing that this is an unavoidable issue. It’s real. And it’s not something we can keep putting off. Yes, it’s scary to think about. And it’s not going to be an easy solution. However, the first step to solving a problem is to acknowledge that there is a problem. And a solution. And that’s what this day of action is about. It’s the first step in the fight against climate change. It’s made up of many people contributing in small ways, tiny drops of water coming together to create a flood of support. Whether it’s attending one of the marches, sharing about it on Facebook, or just learning more about the topic, everyone can make a difference. You can click here or above to go learn more about the People’s Climate Movement, or just go out and learn on your own. Either way, this isn’t an unavoidable, unbeatable opponent. Yes, climate change is a serious issue. Yes, we can solve it. And yes, we will all benefit from doing so.
